Word History
The adjective weird came from an earlier noun weird, which meant "fate." A long time ago
people started to use the noun weird as an adjective in a phrase "the Weird Sisters." The
Weird Sisters were three goddesses who determined the fates of men and women. At first the
adjective weird meant "having to do with fate." Later it came to mean "magical," "fantastic,"
or "strange."
