Spirit-1

History of Spirit-1

Why a history page for Spirit-1? While it is the second longest of my mangas, at first glance it doesn't seem particularly interesting. However, closer examination reveals a great deal of (to me) interesting information.

The origins of Spirit-1 can be traced back to fall of 1998. At the time, I was a freshman in high school, and, as such, had to take biology (which, truthfully, I enjoyed). However, I didn't have a sketchbook at that time, and so was forced to doodle on the dividers in my notebook. Somewhere in my room there is a drawing of the original Vicky- I just can't find it right now...

I liked my character, and decided to come up with a name for her. I came up with two- Tricky Vicky Vixen (by which she is known today), and Pic the Plucky Priestess. While I decided I would call her by the first name (it somehow seemed more appropriate), I thought that the second was too good to waste. And so, soon afterwards, Pic (now called Plick) was born in my history notebook:

Notice that neither one was actually an anime character at this point in time- why? Because I didn't know how to draw anime-style at the time, and ended up teaching myself how in order to draw Plick and Vicky.
At the time, these were some of my best attempts...

The third member of the Spirit-1 gang, Quicksilver Leaf, has an even more complicated history than any of the others- he's actually a combination of several different characters. While learning how to draw anime, I created another character that I fell in love with- Celeste the elf. Though Celeste went through a major "make over" in her transition to Leaf, some of the original design can still be seen in Leaf's dark brown skin, necklace, shoes, and hair thingies.

I was then going to add a boy (in order to somewhat balance the over abundance of females), but I couldn't draw guys very well at the time (I still can't, but I've gotten a bit better since). Due to lack of skill, the potential manga was put on hold for several months, during which I turned to writing fanfics instead, creating some of my longest during this time period.

By the next year, in tenth grade, I was carrying around a sketchbook that was much bigger than my previous ones, which allowed me to start on the manga. All of the characters went through serious changes (with the possible exception of Plick). Leaf reflects my intermissionary stage of fanfics, as in him are incorporated characteristics from several original characters that pranced through my mind: Quicksilver Leaf (from whom Leaf received both his name, white hair, and silver eyes), Midori Green (who was actually based, in part, on Celeste. Leaf received a horn from Midori- but I later got rid of it), and Brian (another source of the hair, also the fact that he's now a guy):

During this "remake" I also created Aurora the fairy- she was actually another incarnation of Celeste:

Aurora didn't last very long, and became PixEe a few months later, after I had already started on the manga.

The actual manga of Spirit-1 began one day in my English class, when I was, yet again, really bored. When this triumphant moment arrived, I found myself in need of a name for my wonderful creation. Dumbfounded, I came up with "Spirit-1," and the name has stuck ever since. Don't ask me what it means- I have no idea.

And that, my friends, is the (condensed) history of my first manga.

(...and, if you really want to look at the big picture, the reason this site exists- since it was to draw this that I taught myself how to draw anime-style, and this site is, essentially, an archive of my anime art...)
