Date: fall 2001? (I can't remember ^.^;;) When I took AP Studio Art in high school, one of the first projects that we had to do was a self-portrait. Our teacher told us that we shouldn't do a straight-on portrait, since they always turn out looking like a "deer in headlights". The poor kids who had decided to do a drawing & painting portfolio had to do a pencil drawing of themselves, while us 2D people got to use color (I think we were supposed to use funky colors and make it look really strange and artsy, but I didn't ^.^;;). Me, I had to be different from everyone else and draw myself full-on. The hardest part of this piece was getting the hair done I drew most of the head rightsideup and then turned the entire picture upsidedown, but I couldn't figure out how the hair would look! Luckily, I was able to hang upsidedown from a really tall (and very rickety!) stool long enough for my teacher to take some blurry snapshots of my hair upsidedown. They were of very poor quality, and it was hard to draw the hair correctly on the Bristol board. I hate the background. I did a preliminary sketch in my sketchbook using Prismacolor markers, but for some reason when I painted it with acrylic, it turned out awful. Blech :P |
